Thursday Thoughts: Long Climbs

Climbing in the mountains is different.  A mountain must be approached with respect.  It’s not possible to charge right up a six mile long climb.  Attempting to do so will leave the rider gasping on the side of the road.

Every mountain ascent is a test.

It’s really no contest.  The mountain always wins.

Wonderful scenery doesn’t explain the climb.  It’s there, but it’s not really sufficient reason.

The terrific descents don’t justify the efforts.  They are fun and a challenge all their own, but they are not long enough to offset the effort.

In the long run, we climb to climb.

We climb because something inside us insists that we do so.

We climb to defeat something inside us, something which says we can not.

We climb because we must.
