The last of the Christmas lights have gone out. It’s somehow much darker out now. Winter has certainly settled in. Now this. Ice and snow, treacherous driving conditions, and bitter cold. (I know! It’s worse “up north,” but this is happening here!) Whatever are we to do?
Well, we could go for a ride. And that’s exactly what a surprisingly large group of us did yesterday. Only one rider among us was a novice, and strictly speaking, she wasn’t really. Jenifer is new to road riding, but she is a seasoned cyclist, with a lot of mountain bike experience. The rest of the group consisted (in no particular order) of Dan, John, Bob, Ed, Kelvin, Chris, and your faithful correspondent.
Know what made this one a good ride? Everyone knew what they were doing, and played by the rules. We weren’t out to prove anything. (Or possibly we proved it by just being out there.) The gang stayed together, and just had fun. What a neat ride!
Another way to combat Winter Blahs… Plan some stuff! There’s already a lot to look forward to. Here’s a partial list:
- Saul Raisin is coming to town this Saturday
- The next Dawn Patrol is this coming Sunday (see the tour calendar at left)
- We’re going to do a group mountain bike ride on the 30th of this month.
- A new ride just waiting to go on the calendar.
Saul Raisin Will be at Bicycles Unlimited, on Saturday 15 January, 2011. He’ll be there from 4:00 PM, until 8 PM. He’s going to be chatting and signing his book, Tour de Life. Saul is a former pro cyclist, who crashed hard and sustained sever head injuries. He has made a remarkable recovery, and he is well worth meeting and listening too.
Dawn Patrol: Try it, you might like it. We’ll be meeting at the Peachtree City IHOP (across from The Avenue shopping center). Ride time is 04:30, on Sunday 16 January. We’ll be out for about four hours. Check the South Side Cycling Club calendar for details.
Novice Mountain Bike Ride: The idea is to start doing some group mountain bike riding. Consider this, a beginner’s mountain bike ride, with skills instruction, and some carefully directed practice. This is intended to help beginners learn to ride in the woods. The trails are not difficult, and we’ll be there to help out.
Where: The Baseball Soccer Complex on GA-74 south, in Peachtree City
When: Sunday 30 January, 2:00 PM
Conditions & Requirements: Helmets are definitely required. Bring a mountain bike and dress for the weather. Ride will cancel if raining, or if trail conditions are too muddy. No ride if temp is below 20 degrees at ride time.
A New Ride: It’s been a while since we’ve done this one. It’s called The Funnest Road Ride in Georgia. The ride starts and ends in Helen, GA. It’s an out-and-back, of about 68 miles, and includes some of the most beautiful country in the state. Additionally, the section along the side of the lakes is some of the more technical road riding to be found. It’s an absolute blast to ride! There is an amazing lunch stop at the mid-point, with the world’s best grilled cheese sandwiches. Watch here, and at the South Side Cycling Club’s ride calendar for dates and details.
There! That should give us all something to look forward to.
